Builder's Hinges

Butt Hinges
Butt Hinges are traditional hinges and require a section of the edge of the door to be rebated so the hinge will sit flat with the edge of the door and therefore function.

Non-ortice / Easy Fit / Hirline Hinges
These hinges are designed so that it is not necessary to rebate the wood to fit the hinge - these hinges are easier to fit and save time. Used primarily on internal doors.

Fixed Pin vs Loose Pin
Most hinges used for doorways are loose pin hinges. This means the pin can be removed for ease of fitting or later maintenance of the door. Loose pin hinges are primarily Butt type hinges. For security - loose pin hinges should never be used on external doors. INSTALLATION CAUTION
When fitting hinges to internal hollow core doors check that the hinges are being fitted to the side recommended by the door manufacturer. Follow the door manufacturers instructions for hanging the door. How many hinges to fit to a door?
Use two hinges at least 85mm in length for average doors up to 2040mm in height and 35mm. For doors over 2040mm in height and more than 35mm thick and under 2340mm use three hinges at least 100mm in length. Doors over 2340 require at least four 100mm hinges. Where hydraulic closers are used doors experience additional loading during use and at least three hinges are recommended for these doors.
